The Dalai Lama said animations work just as well as traditional prayer wheels. As the image spins, waves of compassion emanate in all directions purifying the area. The spinning of hard drives of several thousand rotations per minute can also add to the effect!

EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS!

Dae Yen Sa Film Festival!

Dear Sangha: We are pleased to announce the start of our nine-week "Film Festival" Series, this Friday, the 9th of September. We will gather at 7:00 PM, and will start the movie at 7:30. Our intention for this first showing, and as many thereafter as weather will permit, is to have the film outdoors - kind of like a "drive-in"! Should be fun!! With that in mind, dress accordingly, bring lawn chairs, cushions, blankets, what have you. Also, you might want to consider some bug repellent - you never know what other sentient beings may want to attend.

The movies will all have a Buddhist theme or story, and are pretty much family appropriate. One of the movies that we are aware of does have a scene or two that could be considered "mature". When this one comes up, we will notify you in the reminder e-mail.

Our license to show these movies prohibits us from using the names of the films in these temple-wide announcements. For information about the movie title, ratings (if available - some of the films are not rated), and descriptions of the film can be given on an individual basis by contacting Lori Chernyha at lchernyha@gmail.com .

So, please come and enjoy the show!! We encourage you to bring family, friends, neighbors, whomever.

We ask for a five dollar donation to the temple to cover costs, and this will include popcorn and hot chocolate or bottled water.

We will send announcements weekly with a description of the featured film, and any specifics that may apply. Again for further information contact Lori via e-mail.

Hope to see you all there,
Namu

The course, entitled "Finding One Buddhism: From Scripture to No Doctrine", is being led by Brother Aaron Doyle. We are all grateful for his time, teaching, insights and big heart!

BUDDHIST THOUGHT:

Om Mani Padme Hum

Mantra in Tibetan script

Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, invites the blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion.

They also believe you can produce the same effect by spinning the written form of the mantra around in a prayer wheel (called "Mani wheels" by the Tibetans). The effect is said to be multiplied when more copies of the mantra are included, and spinning the Mani wheels faster increases the benefit as well.

See more information and digital prayer wheels here.

Largest Prayer Wheel in the World

The largest prayer wheel in the world is located in Zhongdian / Shangri-la, China. It is a Tibetan buddhist prayer wheel. A prayer wheel is a cylindrical "wheel" on a spindle made from metal, wood, stone, leather, or coarse cotton. Traditionally, the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum is written in Sanskrit on the outside of the wheel. Also sometimes depicted are Dakinis, Protectors and very often the 8 auspicious symbols Ashtamangala. According to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition based on the lineage texts regarding prayer wheels, spinning such a wheel will have much the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayers.

Mindfulness Retreat

Join in the retreat Saturday, August 6, 2011! Tell your friends and share the brochure too!
Everyone is welcome.

How can we be peaceful, happy and well in the present moment, if we are lost in the past, or anticipating the future? The answer is Mindfulness practice.

Mindfulness is about bringing our full attention to whatever is in front of us, in the present moment, without letting distractions of the mind pull us away. When walking, walk. When sitting, sit. When eating, eat. With Mindfulness, life can become fresher, more authentic, calmer, and more fulfilling. Let's spend the day together learning and practicing Mindfulness! Namu.

BUDDHIST THOUGHT:

Buddha Eyes

On virtually every stupa (Buddhist shrine) in Nepal, there are giant pairs of eyes staring out from the four sides of the main tower.

These are Buddha Eyes (also known as Wisdom Eyes), and they look out in the four directions to symbolize the omniscience (all-seeing) of a Buddha.

The Buddha eyes are so prevalent throughout the country that they have become a symbol of Nepal itself.

Between the Buddha's eyes where the nose would be is a curly symbol that looks like question mark.

This is the Nepali character for the number 1, which symbolizes unity of all the things as well as the one way to reach enlightenment—through the Buddha's teachings.

Above this is a third eye, symbolizing the all-seeing wisdom of the Buddha.

See more on religious symbols here.
