Buddhist Thought It is often said that "the purpose of meditation" (a dubious phrase, granted) is not to stop thoughts from arising, but rather to see them at the very moment that they arise. If we buy into this idea, then we can take it a little further still. To see thoughts as they arise means that we have shifted our focus from "outward" to "inward". We are looking back, metaphorically speaking, to where the thoughts are coming from, rather than being carried along by them to wherever it is they are going. Casting our gaze back to the very source of thought is called "Tracing Back the Radiance". To read more, visit the link: http://zenmind.org/basics.html Schedule Reminders! Please read according to how deeply you wish to study: Purification practices are used to mitigate unbeneficial karma and generate wholesome karma to strengthen and steady our overall practice. This fosters the development of bodhichitta, which assists us on the path to awakening. Purification practices vary by tradition and there is no one size that fits all: each individual needs to find what works for them. Buddhist Thought Emptiness, The Heart SutraThe perfection of wisdom refers to the wisdom that directly and intuitively understands the ultimate nature of phenomena. Sariputra answers with the profound words, "Emptiness is form; form is emptiness," and proceeds to state the emptiness of the five aggregates (skandhas), the emptiness of the teachings (dharmas), and the emptiness of all phenomena. The sutra ends with the celebrated mantra "gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha" which can be translated with "Homage to the awakened mind which has gone over to the other shore." The one who has gone over means: the enlightened one, who has done away with views, ideas, and perceptions and who looks upon reality without any obstructions of mind.To read more visit http://thebigview.com/buddhism/emptiness.html Schedule Reminders! Printed by The Buddhist Association of the United States, 2000, originally published in 1907, pages 1-15. Books are available free of charge. Please read further according to how deeply you wish to study. [You can read a slightly different translation of the first sutta online at www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/dn/dn.31.0.nara.html.] Please note: This book is not intimidating or authoritarian as its title might suggest. It is a compilation of two suttas along with a collection of fourteen illustrative stories excerpted from other suttas. In them the Buddha expounds his teachings and reasoning on behaviors, relationships and responsibilities; it is not a rule book. Translated over 100 years ago, certain word choices -- including in the title -- appear dated and simplified to communicate effectively to the readership of the time, however the Buddha's timeless gentle wisdom shines brightly through. It's astonishing how relevant this 2,500 year-old wisdom remains! Be Buddha! Buddhist Thought Buddhist perspective of lay morality The Buddhist perspective of morality is given in a nutshell in the little Pali verse. "To keep away from all evil, cultivate good, and purify one’s mind is the advice of all Buddhas." We must understand what is meant as good and evil in the Buddha’s teaching. Again the Buddha explains the criterion of morality when he advises his son Samanera Rahula:- "If you wish to do a certain action, first reflect whether the action is likely to harm yourself or others or both. If the action is likely to cause suffering, refrain from doing it." To read more visit http://www.lankaweb.com/dhamma/view12.html Schedule Reminders!
