Study Topic for Wednesday 7/29/09: Chapter 8 - Meditative Concentration (verses 1-71)Way of the Bodhisattva by 8th Century Master, Shantideva(This well-known and loved text focuses on the cultivation and enhancement of Bodhicitta-a quality of completely open, or completely awakened heart and mind.)

Chapter 8 Meditative Concentration
If you have not felt challenged by Shantidava's insights and instruction so far, look out! Meditative Concentration focuses our attention on how we should orient our lives, and indeed our life styles, in order to follow the bodhisattva path. Among the topics are renunciation of worldly attachments and craving, the importance of retreat and solitude to our practice, being mindful in our associations and relationships with others, and, in Shantideva's usual vivid imagery, instruction on snuffing out the flames of carnal desire and lust.

So many are the leanings and wants of beings
That even Buddha could not please them all–
Of such a wretch like me no need to speak!
I'll give up such concerns with worldly things.
WOB ch. 8, v. 22
