Reqirement - open minds and open hearts Study Topic Way of the Bodhisattva by 8th Century Master, Shantideva Chapter 6- Patience (Verses 70-End Chapter) This well-known and loved text focuses on the cultivation and enhancement of Bodhicitta-a quality of completely open, or completely awakened heart and mind. Chapter 6 Patience: This chapter continues in the instruction of extinguishing anger with the cool water of patience. Anger can start with a small ember of resentment and spread into a huge consuming flame. Shantideva is asking us to notice the “tinder” in our minds that can enflame our mind and keep us enslaved in an infernal samsaric state. Jealousy, envy, pride revenge and so forth, have an addictive energy. They hold out the promise of comfort once our emotion is sated, but this is like throwing kerosene on the fire to put it out. Instead the instruction is to throw out these fiery emotions, tinder for the flames of hate. We also learn that those people or circumstances that provoke us can be opportunities for learning and deepening our bodhisattva practice. And finally, Shantideva reminds us of the wonderful graces we have received through the eternal patience of buddhas and bodhisattvas of the past present and future and that we can take heart and be great compassion for others. “By helping beings we repay the ones Who sacrifice their lives for us and plunge into the hell of Unrelenting pain. Should beings therefore do great harm to me, I’ll strive to bring them only benefit.
