Study Topic

Way of the Bodhisattva by 8th Century Master, Shantideva

Chapter 5 - Vigilant Introspection (Verses 1-55)

In chapters 4, 5 and 6 Shantideva is literally pleading with us to remain attentive to our Bodhicitta practice. He knows through experience, as do we, that any merit gained can very easily be lost. In relationships, for example, we are all too familiar with the phrases, "I said something stupid" or "I just wasn't thinking". The negative results of unkind or unmindful words can leave karmic imprints that can have lasting effects. Shantideva encourages us to be watchful of all of our actions body, speech - actions that have their origination in the mind. Chapter 5 focuses primarily on working with the mind. While we cannot control the circumstances of everyday life, we can certainly be responsible for the way we receive life experience and the attitude by which we respond. By restraining or re-training the mind, we can work with whatever externals may arise with greater dignity and compassion. Gentle and continuous meditation is necessary, however. Prayer without ceasing! '

Harmful beings are everywhere like space itself.

Impossible it is that all should be suppressed.

But let this angry mind alone be overthrown,

And it's as though all foes had been subdued
