Study Topic

Way of the Bodhisattva by 8th Century Master, Shantideva

Chapter 5 - Vigilant Introspection (Verses 56-end chapter)

The remaining verses of chapter 5 focus on the mind/body connection. That is, how we can become carried away by our senses and lose our vigilant introspection. Our bodies should be in the service of a well disciplined mind, not the other way around. Shantideva takes us on a vivid visualization exercise meant to teach us about the impermanence of the body (ex. v.62b-And with the blade of wisdom, strip the flesh from off the bony frame.) His goal is not to demean the body, but to instruct us in the proper use of the body in awakening our hearts and minds for the service to all beings. In addition Shantideva gives us some practical behavioral instruction on how we should purport ourselves as we practice bodhicitta in the mundane aspects of living. While this concludes our reading of Vigilant Introspection, it only begins our practice of it. May we all continue in our gentle, yet consistent and attentive practice of mindfulness in every situation of life.

But all this must be acted out in truth,

For what is to be gained by mouthing syllables?

What invalid was ever helped

By merely reading in the doctor's treatises?

WOB CH5,V.109

May we press our palms together in gratitude for the Buddha compassion, Dharma wisdom, Sangha friendship. Namu.
