Chapter 8 Meditative Concentration
If you have not felt challenged by Shantidava's insights and instruction so far, look out! Meditative Concentration focuses our attention on how we should orient our lives, and indeed our life styles, in order to follow the bodhisattva path. Among the topics are renunciation of worldly attachments and craving, the importance of retreat and solitude to our practice, being mindful in our associations and relationships with others, and, in Shantideva's usual vivid imagery, instruction on snuffing out the flames of carnal desire and lust.

So many are the leanings and wants of beings
That even Buddha could not please them all–
Of such a wretch like me no need to speak!
I'll give up such concerns with worldly things.

Chapter 7 Diligence (Verses 47-End Chapters)

In this second half of the chapter on Diligence, Shantideva begins pointing us in the direction of meditative concentration. Again he stresses the importance of staying with the practice, consistently and gently mindful and awake to emotions like arrogance and pride that can undermine our good efforts and merit. The point is made that with bodhicitta as our goal diligence can be joyfully and carefully maintained.

“Just as flaxen threads waft to and fro,

impelled by every breath of wind,

So all I do will be achieved,

Controlled by movements of a joyful heart

Chapter 7 Diligence (Verses 1-46)

Our next three chapters, Diligence, Meditatitive Concentration, and Wisdom focus on how we can intensify our Bodhicitta practice. Diligence can be also be referred to as Consistency or Constancy. Shantideva calls us here to remain faithful to our practice of a continual letting go of attachments and wrong views that imprison us in a cycle of endless and needless suffering. A gentle and patient returning to our true nature in mindfulness is what is called for. By training with the small things of life we will be prepared to meet life’s bigger challenges. Little by little like drops of water in a bucket merit is gained. This is Buddhist the faith.

“Our guide instructs us to begin

By giving vegetable greens or other little things,

That later, step-by-step, the habit once acquired,

We may be able to donate our very flesh.

Chapter 6- Patience (Verses 70-End Chapter)

This well-known and loved text focuses on the cultivation and enhancement of Bodhicitta-a quality of completely open, or completely awakened heart and mind.

Chapter 6 Patience:

This chapter continues in the instruction of extinguishing anger with the cool water of patience. Anger can start with a small ember of resentment and spread into a huge consuming flame. Shantideva is asking us to notice the “tinder” in our minds that can enflame our mind and keep us enslaved in an infernal samsaric state. Jealousy, envy, pride revenge and so forth, have an addictive energy. They hold out the promise of comfort once our emotion is sated, but this is like throwing kerosene on the fire to put it out. Instead the instruction is to throw out these fiery emotions, tinder for the flames of hate. We also learn that those people or circumstances that provoke us can be opportunities for learning and deepening our bodhisattva practice. And finally, Shantideva reminds us of the wonderful graces we have received through the eternal patience of buddhas and bodhisattvas of the past present and future and that we can take heart and be great compassion for others.

“By helping beings we repay the ones

Who sacrifice their lives for us and plunge into the hell of

Unrelenting pain.

Should beings therefore do great harm to me,

I’ll strive to bring them only benefit.

Chapter 6- Patience (verses 1-69)

This well-known and loved text focuses on the cultivation and enhancement of Bodhicitta-a quality of completely open, or completely awakened heart and mind.

Chapter 6 Patience In Buddhism, anger is the most destructive of all mental factors. The emotion of anger, which is a flooding of the mind with violent and aggressive feelings, leads naturally to hostility. In a flash of hositility all the merit we have gained on the way is eliminated. Even righteous anger is condemned, since it can overpower our mind and eliminate our concentration and our Bodhicitta focus. The only antidote is Patience with a capital “P”. We will explore the nature of anger. Ways of seeing anger. And ways of catching and working with our anger in order to live more lovingly and compassionately.

“All the good works gathered in a thousand ages, such as deeds of generosity, and offerings to the blissful ones – a single flash of anger shatters them.

WOB, chapter 6, verse 1

Chapter 5 - Vigilant Introspection (Verses 56-end chapter)

The remaining verses of chapter 5 focus on the mind/body connection. That is, how we can become carried away by our senses and lose our vigilant introspection. Our bodies should be in the service of a well disciplined mind, not the other way around. Shantideva takes us on a vivid visualization exercise meant to teach us about the impermanence of the body (ex. v.62b-And with the blade of wisdom, strip the flesh from off the bony frame.) His goal is not to demean the body, but to instruct us in the proper use of the body in awakening our hearts and minds for the service to all beings. In addition Shantideva gives us some practical behavioral instruction on how we should purport ourselves as we practice bodhicitta in the mundane aspects of living. While this concludes our reading of Vigilant Introspection, it only begins our practice of it. May we all continue in our gentle, yet consistent and attentive practice of mindfulness in every situation of life.

But all this must be acted out in truth,

For what is to be gained by mouthing syllables?

What invalid was ever helped

By merely reading in the doctor's treatises?

Chapter 5 - Vigilant Introspection (Verses 1-55)

In chapters 4, 5 and 6 Shantideva is literally pleading with us to remain attentive to our Bodhicitta practice. He knows through experience, as do we, that any merit gained can very easily be lost. In relationships, for example, we are all too familiar with the phrases, "I said something stupid" or "I just wasn't thinking". The negative results of unkind or unmindful words can leave karmic imprints that can have lasting effects. Shantideva encourages us to be watchful of all of our actions body, speech - actions that have their origination in the mind. Chapter 5 focuses primarily on working with the mind. While we cannot control the circumstances of everyday life, we can certainly be responsible for the way we receive life experience and the attitude by which we respond. By restraining or re-training the mind, we can work with whatever externals may arise with greater dignity and compassion. Gentle and continuous meditation is necessary, however. Prayer without ceasing! '

Harmful beings are everywhere like space itself.

Impossible it is that all should be suppressed.

But let this angry mind alone be overthrown,

And it's as though all foes had been subdued

HIGHLIGHT FROM JUNE RETREAT

Why do We Light the Lantern

Anita presented information about the great spiritual significance of lighting the lantern to dispel ignorance and reveal the light of knowledge. The traditional fuel used (ghee), the burning wick, and the light itself all have special relevance to the journey. The detail given in describing the ghee as the material purified by burning, the bridging of the wick also burning away, and the remaining light is very special. The lantern is not diminished by lighting other lanterns, and the effect of burning lanterns spreading light is cumulative.

7:30-8:30pm Study/Discussion: Way of the Bodhisattva, by Shantideva, Chapter 3, Taking Hold of Bodhicitta

So far we have read and reflected on chapter 1, The Excellence of Bodhicitta, which describes the supreme virtue and practice of radical compassion and the benefit of entering into this practice. In chapter 2, Shantideva reveals his human weakness and vows to embrace bodhicitta in order to save all beings. In chapter 3, we will explore how a life lived with bodhicitta is a life lived in the service of others even unto death. As in ch.3, v.13: This body I have now resigned to serve the pleasure of all living beings. Let them ever kill, despise and beat it, using it according to their wish. How can we develop this kind of self-giving compassion? How are we individually called to practice bodhicitta in our everyday lives? We will reading, reflecting and sharing in sangha.

We will resume our study in the main temple. Please join us. All welcomed!!
